Toyota Conventional Motor Oil vs Toyota Synthetic Motor Oil | Northridge Toyota, serving North Hills, Granada Hills, Lake Balboa & Mission Hills, Pacoima, Arleta

Which Toyota Motor oil do you need? Conventional or Synthetic? Does it make a difference?

Synthetic Oil

Synthetic oils are typically manmade, usually derived from natural gas or alcohol. Meaning they mimic the functionality of conventional motor containing no undesirable contaminants. They’re also more stable at a variety of temperatures. They don’t thin out as much when they get hot or excessively thicken in cold weather. Synthetic oil usually allows you to go longer between oil changes because it doesn’t break down as quickly as conventional oil. Thanks to the advances in modern technology, synthetic oil is also readily available and the price of this option is getting more affordable as the years pass.

Conventional Oil

Conventional lubricants are made from crude oil. It’s extracted from the ground and then extensively refined to remove impurities. After that it gets blended with other chemicals. Conventional oils also have a level of insolubles (materials that is, all solid or liquid that are won't mix in oil) such as: paraffin, waxes, silicon, dirt. Under certain conditions these substances can form deposits inside an engine. The major benefit of using conventional oil is that it’s easily available, affordable, and recommended by most vehicle manufacturers.

Synthetic Oil Myths

  1. Once you switch to synthetic oil, you can never switch back.

This is one of the most persistent myths about synthetic oil—and completely untrue. You can switch back and forth at any time. In fact, synthetic blends are simply a mixture of synthetic and conventional oils. It is advisable that you use the same oil for top-ups if needed, thereby giving you the best protection from the oil that you have chosen.

  2. Synthetic motor oil should not mix with conventional motor oil

It's fine to mix oils and very unlikely anything bad would happen, because the oils are compatible with each other. But it is not recommended to routinely mix oils because the additives in different products may interact or the oils may lose it potency.
But if you are constantly adding motor oil than you should, bring your Toyota vehicle to Northridge Toyota for service and we will track and stop the leakeage in your vehicle.

  3. You shouldn’t use synthetic oil in an older vehicle.

False! That was true about couple decades ago. After massive improvements, synthetic oils have come a long way since the early 1970's. There is no longer an issue about synthetic oil is “slipperier” and not as compatible with seals and will therefore leak or leak more in places conventional oil might not.
Today synthetic oils actually enhance the engine protection in older vehicles, just as they do for new engines.

Should You Use Synthetic Oil in Your Vehicle?

Some Toyota vehicles don't require "synthetic," so quality conventional oils will do the job in protecting your engine. But, just because your Toyota don't require "synthetics," it doesn't mean you will not receive the same fuel economy benefits and increased engine longevity by using the better products.
There are some situations where synthetic oil’s can help prolong the life of an engine. If you make lots of short trips, standard motor oil may never get warm enough to burn off moisture and impurities. That could hasten the breakdown of conventional oil. If you use your Toyota Tacoma or Toyota Tundra for towing or hauling heavy material, synthetic oil won’t break down as quickly as conventional oil.

By keeping up with frequent oil changes, your engine will continue to run smoothly and with the power you expect. Consult your owner's manual and our Toyota Service advisor as to the type of oil they recommend for your Toyota. If your car is due for an oil change bring it over to Northridge Toyota and schedule an appointment to have your oil changed today!
