Toyota Extended Warranties: What Are They Exactly?

Purchasing a new, pre-owned, or certified pre-owned Toyota vehicle is an investment, but a wise one. Toyota cars, trucks, and SUVs are widely known as some of the most reliable vehicles on the road today. With that said, it’s never a bad idea to consider additional protection for your vehicle, especially in the form of Toyota Extended Warranty options, otherwise known as Toyota Vehicle Service Agreements.

There are three levels of the Toyota Extended Warranty, each offering a different benefit to drivers in the Northridge area. However, things can get a little confusing trying to decipher what each tier covers and offers. Fortunately, this Toyota Extended Warranty guide will give you all the information you need to decide which plan is right for you. Without further ado, let’s dive in.

What is the Toyota Extended Warranty?

Essentially, it’s an extra layer of protection for your Toyota’s mechanical parts once the original factory warranty has ended. The standard Toyota warranty for new vehicles is three years or 36,000 miles (whichever comes first). Toyota Extended Warranty options can last up to 10 years, though there are some criteria your vehicle will need to meet. Every warranty also includes 24/7 roadside assistance and reimburses you for some expenses, such as rentals, meals, and accommodations (hotels). In summary, it’s a good way to avoid incredibly costly repairs if the worst should happen.

Please note: Regardless of the Toyota Extended Warranty option you choose, you will need to bring your vehicle in for routine maintenance to keep the coverage valid—though these costs are not generally covered, you can explore ToyotaCare packages for pre-paid maintenance plans.

Toyota Extended Warranty: Powertrain Protection

The Toyota Powertrain option is the entry-level option that provides coverage for six years or 100,000 miles. It’s the most affordable option, though it doesn’t cover as much. If you’re seeking a Toyota Extended Warranty for a used vehicle, this coverage plan maxes out at two years or 24,000 miles. The Powertrain plan covers:

  • The engine
  • Transmission
  • Axles
  • Some hybrid components

These are the most expensive parts in a vehicle, so while this plan doesn’t cover much more than the basics, it’s a solid option to save some money now and some money later.

Toyota Extended Warranty: Gold Protection

The Gold level is the next step up, casting a wider net of components that are covered. Everything that’s covered in the Powertrain option is covered here as well, with additional parts including:

  • Suspension
  • Steering
  • Fuel systems
  • Cooling systems
  • Brakes
  • Electrical systems
  • Computers and electronics
  • HVAC

As you may have guessed, this plan is a little more expensive than the basic Powertrain plan, but does cover some other expensive items that may break down over time. For new vehicles, the Gold package has a range of three years or 50,000 miles up to eight years or 125,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Toyota Extended Warranty: Platinum Package

Last, we have the highest level of coverage, the Platinum option. If you want to never worry about a Toyota part or component again, this is the package for you. Everything covered in the Gold option is covered here, but it also covers the infotainment system and navigation (if applicable) and nearly all mechanical components to the vehicle. For new vehicles, coverage durations last from three years or 50,000 miles up to 10 years or 125,000 miles, whichever comes first.

What Doesn’t a Toyota Extended Warranty Cover?

Parts that are expected to wear down over time, regardless of care and maintenance, are not covered. Here is the list that Toyota has put out that is not eligible for coverage under any Toyota Extended Warranty option:

  • Brake pads and linings
  • Fluids
  • Tires
  • Spark plugs
  • Carpets
  • Upholstery (cloth, leather, etc.)
  • Windshields, windows, or mirrors
  • Oil changes
  • Batteries
  • Body panels
